Advancing the Scientific Investigation of the Wood Ape
SasquatchScience.org is dedicated to the rigorous, data-driven exploration of North America’s most elusive mystery—the unrecognized species commonly referred to as the wood ape, Sasquatch, Bigfoot, or the Skunk Ape. We don’t research the spirit entities, orbs, or portals. We focus on conducting and analyzing scientifically-driven field research primarily in the dense, biologically rich environments of Florida with long histories of credible sighting reports and unexplained physical evidence.
The Case for the North American Wood Ape
For generations, people across North America have reported sightings of a large, hairy, human-like creature walking upright through forests, swamps, and mountains. Known by many names—Sasquatch, skunk ape, or wood ape—this mysterious animal has long been part of Indigenous stories and modern-day eyewitness accounts.
Although skeptics often dismiss these reports due to a lack of physical proof, history shows us that other now-accepted animals—like the mountain gorilla and the giant panda—were also once thought to be myths. Both species were known to local peoples for centuries before being recognized by science in the 19th and 20th centuries. This is strong support for science to begin serious research into the wood ape.
Native American tribes across the continent have stories of large, intelligent forest beings. These aren’t just myths—they often describe behaviors and appearances that match what modern witnesses report today. Researchers have found large, human-like footprints in remote areas, and scientists like Dr. Jeff Meldrum have studied these tracks and found features consistent with known, non-human primates.
Field researchers have also recorded strange vocalizations—howls, knocks, and whoops—that don’t match any known animal but do resemble the calls of apes. Some areas, like the dense forests of Oklahoma and the wetlands of Florida, have been hotspots for ongoing investigation. The North American Wood Ape Conservancy (NAWAC) has spent years documenting activity and collecting evidence.
This emphasizes that anecdotal evidence, especially when repeated across time and culture, can be a powerful clue. Just as the stories of gorillas and pandas led scientists to confirm their existence, the consistent reports of large primates in North America may point to a real animal waiting to be officially recognized and protected.
It's time to take the mystery seriously—not as proof of a monster, but as a scientific question worth answering.
